                                                           Flea Lifecycle

Advantage:

Advantage is a topical adulticide which is applied every 4 weeks. It is applied to the skin on the back of the neck where it diffuses through the skin over the rest of the body. The active ingredient imidacloprid,  kills adult fleas on contact before they can lay eggs.  As a result the fleas die before they have a chance to bite. Advantage kills  98-100% of adult fleas within 24 hours after application. It also works to kill lice and is safe for us in puppies and kittens over 8 weeks. Available in 4 and 6 month supply packages.

K9 Advantix:

K9 advantix is applied and works the same way as advantage, the difference is that K9 advantix repels and kills ticks.  K9 Advantix® combines imidacloprid and permethrin to repel and kill fleas and ticks that may cross your dog's path. Each ingredient begins to affect pests on contact, attacking parasite nerve cells at different sites.

CAUTION: K9 Advantix is toxic to cats. If your cat actively grooms your dog, or if they regularly are in close contact, we recommend that you to separate them for 12 hours after application.

Program:

Program for dogs comes in a tablet form which lasts for 4 weeks. For cats, Program comes in liquid form or as an injectable. The liquid form is given orally which lasts for 4 weeks, and the injectable is administered by the veterinarian and lasts for 6 months. The active ingredient is lufenuron which works to control the flea population by interrupting the flea life cycle. When the Adult fleas bite they ingest the product which acts as birth control for fleas. Program will not stop you from seeing adults, but it will stop them from laying eggs. It is safe for puppies and kittens at 6 weeks of age. Program is safe to use with other products, and can be purchased individually.

Capstar:

Capstar is a tablet which can be given to both cats and dogs to kill fleas fast. One tablet will start to kill adult fleas in 15-30 minutes lasting 24 hours in dogs and 48 hours in cats. The active ingredient in Capstar is nitenpyram. This product can safely be given as often as once a day and can be used with other flea products. It is safe for puppies and kittens at 4 weeks of age and can be purchased individually.

Revolution:

Revolution is a topical parasiticide which is applied every 4 weeks to the skin on the back of the neck. Revolution kills adult fleas and prevents flea eggs from hatching for one month. The active ingredient, selemectin, is absorbed into the bloodstream and intestinal tract. This product is also used in the prevention of heartworm disease, ear mites,  sarcoptic mange, and ticks, and for cats in the prevention of hook worm and round worm. Must be prescribed by the veterinarian and can be purchased individually. Safe for puppies and kittens at 6 weeks of age.

Ovicollars:

Ovicollars release an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR), a juvenile growth hormone unique to insects, that prohibits immature fleas from developing into adults. These soft pliable collars are effective for 8 months on dogs and 11 months on cats. They do not kill adult fleas but are very effective at breaking the flea lifecycle and stopping flea infestation.

Siphotrol 1000 Premise Spray:

Siphotrol kills adults/pre-adults fleas, and ticks hidden in the home. The spray contains a combination of two insect control ingredients. Precor, an insect growth regulator, which effectively breaks the flea life cycle for 7 months by preventing the flea's development into the adult biting stage. The second insect control ingredient is permethrin which kills the adult fleas, brown dog and American dog ticks. This product is not to be used on your pet! For the best results, Siphotrol should be used in conjunction with another flea control product for your pet.

Flea Facts

Fleas lay up to 10-20 eggs per day, and will multiply to 10,000 fleas in three months. Fleas can transmit tapeworms to your pet. They can also cause a severe skin condition called Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD). Some pets actually become allergic to the saliva of the flea and one bite can cause severe hypersensitivity. Typical flea allergy in dogs causes a severe itching and hair loss at the base of your pet’s tail. Fleas will also bite people if pets are not available.
